Be a part of the 4th Unogwaja Challenge as the 2014 team pedal out of Cape Town on Thursday 22nd May

The 4th Unogwaja Challenge will pedal out of Southern Sun Waterfront, Cape Town in the early hours on Thursday 22nd May. This iconic journey is becoming one of South Africa’s most unique annual events that encompasses so much more than an epic 10 day team cross country bike ride followed by the Comrades Marathon on day 11.

Certainly, even the make up of this year’s team tells a story representing 8 different nationalities and a spread of people from all over South Africa who have set out to raise over R1million for the 6 official charities of the Comrades Marathon and Unogwaja Challenge.

This is your chance to be a part of this special journey by joining the Proudly South Afican Unogwaja Challenge for their send off cycle as they embark on their own version of Phil Masterton-Smith’s journey to the Comrades Marathon. There are 100 slots available for riders to join the team from Cape Town to Franschhoek leaving Southern Sun, Waterfront in the early hours of the morning on Thursday 22nd May.

Click here to secure your place as a part of Unogwaja Challenge 2014. Tickets are R200 each with 100% of the proceeds going towards the R1million charity mission.

Your R200 will go towards Community Chest, Pink Drive and Wildlands Conservation Trust and will include tea, coffee and snacks at the Southern Sun, Waterfront prior to departure at 4am sharp, a pair of ShoOops! socks to don on the ride (and future adventures!), a great breakfast on arrival in Franschhoek (courtesy of Southern Sun Waterfront) and a chance to bid farewell to the brave Unogwajas in a rousing send-off as they embark upon a 1660km cycle journey across the country culminating in the 89km Comrades road race in their quest to raise R1 million for charity this year.

In 2013, the official send off speech was given by Premier Helen Zille who also handed John McInroy and his team with a letter to hand deliver to the Mayor of Pietermaritzburg, and Protea cricketer, Robin Peterson also accompanied the team on his bike to Franschhoek.

It is right that Jeff Rosenberg, General Manager of the Southern Sun Waterfront, the Cape Town home of Unogwaja, has the last word about the start of the 4th Unogwaja. He and the entire Tsogo Sun family has have shown incredible support since the start of this journey and are really the people who make it possible for more people to join in this.

“Each year we at the Southern Sun Waterfront look forward to being swept up by the spirit of this special journey and all that comes goes with it. The hotel is abuzz with excitement and red socks and this special positive energy fills up the entire building and all that are in it! The more of this the better! We are delighted to offer our full support to the this dream of “following your heart” and this year we are running a couple of competitions to generate some more excitement.”

Southern Sun Waterfront is doing a lucky draw for the first 50 riders to sign up to accompany the Unogwaja Team to Franschoeck on the first part of their epic journey. One of these people will win a free night at the hotel including dinner and a special function with team Unogwaja on Wednesday 21st May. There will also be a prize announced on the day of the ride for the best tweet tagging @TsogoSun and using #SSWaterfront for a weekend stay for two at the hotel anytime in 2014 including dinner, bed and breakfast.
