Crew Announcement Community Chest Unogwaja 2020

In News

The 10th anniversary of the Community Challenge Unogwaja Challenge aims to change the story not only in South Africa but on the road. We have the biggest group of riders in the history of the Challenge – more than double what we have had in previous years – but we will have a small select crew who will cover only the basics.

Why? Well we believe that to follow in Phil Masterton-Smith’s footsteps means being more self-sufficient as a rider, as he himself must have been. It means truly overcoming real adversity as a team to get to Pietermaritzburg on a bicycle and finally to Durban on foot. In addition, with our vision to grow the Challenge in year’s to come, we need to make sure that we can accommodate more and more riders with fewer resources. And the more riders we have the more funds and awareness we raise.

All of this considered, we will have a strong core team of support crew we feel have the heart of an Unogwaja and are ready to serve by sacrificing themselves for the greater good. It is one thing to cycle 1700km and run Comrades but serving these riders is the essence of what it means to give back for what will now be 13 days. Along with the 10 crew we have selected, there will be additional support along the road from the Community Chest of the Western Cape team as well.

“This close and trusted group of individuals will be the backbone of the Community Chest Unogwaja Challenge 2020 and are the true heroes of this story. I look forward to having them on the road with me as we shape history – showing that real leadership starts with servanthood.” – Thamar Houliston, Community Chest Unogwaja Challenge Project Manager.
